Adult Classes — Summer 2008

Our goal for the Sunday morning adult education classes is to provide biblically–based and thought–provoking classes that enable the believer to think and be more like Christ.

7:45 am — “Encountering John — The Gospel in Historical, Literary, and Theological Perspective”
The Gospel of John is crucial to an understanding of the biblical Christology. In this key biblical book Christ is presented in all his divine glory as Savior of humanity. This class will consider the theological and historical importance of John’s gospel and its relevance to the contemporary church. Our primary text is the Bible supplemented by a great textbook written by Dr. A.J. Köstenberger. This 16–week study will help you get an in–depth view of this foundational Gospel. Augustine said, “John’s Gospel is deep enough for an elephant to swim and shallow enough for a child not to drown”. Come and swim with us at each Sunday morning. This class on the Gospel of John is part of the Faith–LED core curriculum.
September 7th through December 21st in North Commons Room 131–132
Taught by Dr. Gary Peterson

9:00 am — Inerrancy
This class will look at the biblical doctrine of inerrancy and its importance to the church. Philosophical and historical considerations will be addressed. Join us as we discuss Christ’s view of the Bible, alleged errors of Scripture and many other important topics.
September 7th through November 23rd in North Commons Rooms 131–132
Taught by Dr. Edwin Chong

9:00 am — Anthropology and Sin
We will look at the nature of humanity from a biblical perspective by examining the pre–fall and post–fall state of man. We will see how these issues were dealt with from a historical perspective by spending time looking at the debate between St. Augustine and Pelagius. We will also attempt to understand the implications of man being created in the image of God and about the origin and nature of sin by asking questions such as: Why did God create us? What is sin? Why did God allow it? Do we have a body, soul, and a spirit? Do we really have a free will?
September 21st through December 14th in North Commons Room 134
Taught by Ryan Kelley

9:00 am — A Conversation for Women
Join us as we read and discuss the book Eve’s Revenge: Women and a Spirituality of the Body. “A book about women, women’s bodies, and the healing gaze of God.” ~Sarah Summer, Azusa Pacfic University. Purchase of the book and study guide are strongly suggested. Contact Stephanie Mikkelsen (970) 226–1055 or dsmikk@juno.com for information on purchasing the both.
September 7th through October 12th in the Prayer Room
Facilitated by Stephanie Mikkelsen

10:30 am — The Cost of Discipleship
Salvation is often presented as a “ticket to heaven” or what some would call “cheap grace”. But the biblical concept of being called to Christ is something much greater. This class will consider the dimensions of discipleship in light of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book and biblical teaching.
September 7th through October 26th in North Commons Room 134
Taught by Tom Molin

10:30 am — Counseling Course
This course is for those interested in lay counseling. The number of participants will be limited. Contact Pastor Saylor for details at (970) 226–2095.
July 13 for 28 weeks in the Genesis room
Taught by Pastor Forest Saylor

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2 (NIV)
